A dramatic update in the case of Billy Williams, the 46-year-old suspect accused of shooting a Webber’s Falls Police officer during a traffic stop in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. On Wednesday, Williams was taken into custody in Grants, New Mexico, after a brief standoff with local authorities.
According to the Grants Police Department, their officers received a BOLO (be on the lookout) from Oklahoma authorities and used their license plate reading cameras to track down the suspect’s vehicle. At 7:42 AM, they spotted the vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot, with Williams inside.
When officers approached him, they attempted to talk to Williams, but instead, they heard a single gunshot and learned he had shot himself in the stomach. He was rushed to a hospital in Albuquerque, where he is currently listed in critical but stable condition under FBI custody.
The FBI has taken over Williams’ custody as the investigation continues.
As previously reported, the incident occurred on Tuesday when a Webber’s Falls Police officer made a traffic stop on Williams, resulting in a confrontation that left the officer shot in the nose. The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
This is an arrest, not a conviction, and Williams is now facing federal charges of assault with intent to murder.
