What is King Cake?

King Cake is a sweet bread that is traditionally eaten during the Carnival season, which culminates on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras Day). The cake is typically shaped into a circle, symbolizing the crown worn by King Baby Jesus after his birth. A small plastic baby (representing the baby Jesus) is often hidden inside the cake, and whoever gets the slice with the baby is said to have good luck and is often tasked with hosting the next King Cake party.

Ingredients :

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon sugar (a mixture of granulated sugar and cinnamon)
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup pecans (optional)
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup colored sugar (for topping)

Instructions :

  • 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine yeast, warm water, and sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  • 2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the bowl. Mix until a dough forms.
  • 3. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • 4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  • 5. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • 6. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a circle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  • 7. Mix together granulated sugar, cinnamon sugar, and raisins. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
  • 8. Roll the dough into a circle, starting from the center. Place the dough seam-side down on a greased baking sheet.
  • 9. Bake the cake for 25-30 minutes, or until it’s golden brown.
  • 10. Let the cake cool for 10 minutes before glazing. Mix together cream cheese, vanilla extract, and salt. Drizzle the glaze over the warm cake.
  • 11. Sprinkle with colored sugar and serve warm.

Tips and Variations

  • To make the King Cake more festive, add a few drops of food coloring to the dough to give it a bright green or purple hue.
  • Replace the raisins with chocolate chips or chopped pecans for a different flavor combination.
  • Serve the King Cake with a side of coffee or hot chocolate for a sweet and indulgent treat.
