Newark, NJ – Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has strongly condemned an illegal raid conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a local fish market, Ocean Seafood Depot, a family-owned restaurant supplier.

According to Mayor Baraka, ICE agents entered the business without a warrant, detaining three individuals who couldn’t produce documentation, and also questioned and detained American workers, including a military veteran.

The mayor emphasized that the Fourth Amendment protects individuals from unreasonable searches and seizures, and that the Constitution must be respected. “No one has the right to go around the laws of this country to make a political point or statement,” he said.

The Newark mayor’s condemnation comes amid growing tensions over federal immigration enforcement tactics. The New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice, an organization that provides legal support to those affected by the raid, is offering assistance to those detained.

Amy Torres, the organization’s executive director, noted that the paths to legal immigration have been severely restricted, making it increasingly difficult for individuals to enter the country legally. “Pathways that were legal on Sunday, such as asylum, the refugee resettlement program, DACA, and TPS, no longer exist,” she said.

The raid has sparked outrage in the community, with many criticizing the ICE’s actions as unconstitutional and heavy-handed. The incident highlights the ongoing debate over immigration reform and the role of ICE in enforcing federal immigration laws.
